Mental health is an integral component of overall well-being, and its importance cannot be overstated. In Kenya, as in many parts of the world, addressing mental health challenges—especially for LGBTQ+ individuals—is a pressing concern. These challenges are often exacerbated by societal discrimination, stigma, and limited access to proper mental health services.
LGBTQ+ individuals in Kenya continue to face significant mental health challenges due to an increasingly hostile environment. Discrimination, violence, and legal restrictions based on sexual orientation and gender identity contribute to stress, anxiety, depression, and other mental health issues.
In recognition of the critical need for mental health support within the LGBTQ+ community, galck+ established its Mental Health Initiative in 2019. Officially launched in 2020, this program has since become an integral part of galck+’s work, addressing the unique mental health challenges faced by LGBTQ+ individuals in Kenya.
Our Goal
The primary goal of our Mental Health Program is to bridge the gap in LGBTQ+-friendly and affirming mental health services. It plays a pivotal role in helping LGBTQ+ individuals cope with emotional distress stemming from threats, violations, and security incidents.
This initiative provides a safe and welcoming space where LGBTQ+ individuals can:
- Fully express themselves.
- Receive emotional support.
- Begin their journey of healing.
- Equip themselves with tools and techniques to navigate life’s pressures and hostile environments.
The program is dedicated to enhancing the overall well-being and resilience of the LGBTQ+ community in Kenya.
Program Access
The galck+ Mental Health Program is designed to meet the unique needs of LGBTQ+ individuals. It is open to all community members seeking support in a non-discriminatory and affirming environment.
To ensure ease of access and a seamless experience, we developed a user-friendly web-based platform that:
- Enables community members to book therapy appointments with ease.
- Enhances convenience while collecting valuable data on service utilization.
- Supports therapists in efficiently managing their schedules and tracking appointments.
