And it’s a wrap!After 4 years, 23 organizations, and countless lessons, the Free to Be Me journey in Kenya hosted by galck+ comes to a close. From strengthening movements, shifting public norms, advancing legal change, to promoting economic empowerment together we built pathways that will outlive the program. 💪🏾🏳️‍🌈Through challenges, resilience, and solidarity, milestones were achieved and voices amplified. Deep gratitude to @hivos (fund manager), the Dutch Government (funder), and every organisation in our Community of Action for walking this journey with us. 🌍This may be the end of the program, but the pathways it set in motion will continue to guide us forward.#FreeToBeMe #galckplus

This past weekend? Babes... it was history. 🇰🇪🏳️‍🌈PEMA Kenya’s 17th Annual General Meeting wasn’t just a meeting, it was a moment. The energy? Electric. The love? Overflowing. The community? SHOWED UP and SHOWED OUT for a celebration rooted in queerness, resilience, and legacy.As a proud member of the Nelion Cluster under the galck+ coalition, @pemakenya continues to do monumental work in advancing LGBTQ+ rights and creating safe, affirming spaces in the coastal region of Kenya work that began in grief but has grown into unstoppable joy and justice.And listen… one of the most emotional moments? Lorna Dias, our outgoing Executive Coordinator at galck+, receiving her flowers literally and figuratively in recognition of her bold, visionary, and unwavering leadership of the movement, and deep, decades-long support to @pemakenya . Did you know…In Kenya, intersex babies are still being taken into surgery to force their bodies into either male or female categories without their consent, without explanation, and often without their parents fully understanding the consequences.Many grow up with scars they didn’t choose and questions no one wants to answer. Later in life, they’re denied IDs, denied services, and denied the right to exist as they are.Why is SRHR still so unsafe for us? It’s time we rethink everything we’ve been taught. Watch “Intersex Persons and the Dangers of Surgeries” by @amka_africa_justice_initiative and start unlearning. They’ve made us believe our bodies are problems to manage not homes to celebrate.We’re done letting shame speak louder than our truths. Our bodies weren’t made just to survive or avoid pregnancy they were made to feel, to explore, to enjoy.In Kenya, we’re taught that sex is danger, that pleasure is shame, and that silence is safety. But we want more softness, more joy, more space for queer love, for trans pleasure, for fat and disabled bodies to feel seen and celebrated.They banned Rafiki and called it “un-African,” but what’s more Kenyan than love? Strolling through memory lane…Three years ago, on July 14, 2022, we launched a groundbreaking report that pulled back the curtain on conversion practices in Kenya, a project born out of resilience, honesty, and the unshakable need to protect queer lives.From the challenges of doing research during a global pandemic to the emotional weight of holding our community’s trauma with care, this study was never just about data. It was about truth, justice, and healing.This work, done in partnership with @outrightintl documented the lived realities of over 500 LGBTQ+ individuals across 15 counties and shaped how we speak about harmful SOGIESC change efforts today.May we never again have to prove that harm exists when our lives are already the evidence.📖 Link in bio to read the full report.

Kenya votes YES! 🇰🇪🏳️‍🌈(Link in bio for full press release)On July 7, 2025, Kenya joined 28 other countries in voting to renew the United Nations mandate that protects LGBTQ+ people from violence and discrimination. This role, called the Independent Expert on SOGI, ensures global attention remains on the treatment of queer communities and holds governments accountable.Kenya’s YES vote is a powerful message of support at the international level, showing that LGBTQ+ rights are human rights. For queer Kenyans, it signals hope, visibility, and a step toward greater protection at home.This is progress, but the work must continue.
