Objective: Challenging discriminatory laws and policies to enhance legal protection for LGBTQ+ persons in Kenya.
Kenya’s legal landscape remains hostile to LGBTQ+ individuals, with outdated colonial-era laws criminalizing same-sex relations and institutional barriers preventing legal recognition of gender diversity. galck+ has been at the forefront of legal advocacy to challenge these injustices through strategic litigation and policy engagement.
Key Activities and Achievements:
- Decriminalization Efforts: Supported legal petitions to repeal Sections 162 and 165 of the Penal Code, which criminalize consensual same-sex relations.
- Strategic Litigation Support: Provided technical and financial resources to cases challenging workplace discrimination, denial of services, and police brutality against LGBTQ+ persons.
- Legal Awareness Campaigns: Conducted “Know Your Rights” workshops to empower LGBTQ+ individuals with legal knowledge and access to justice.
- Policy Engagement: Engaged with lawmakers, human rights commissions, and international bodies to push for inclusive policies that recognize and protect LGBTQ+ rights.
Looking ahead, galck+ is working on expanding legal aid services, advocating for gender recognition laws, and lobbying for the full implementation of human rights frameworks that safeguard LGBTQ+ persons in Kenya.
