The Mental Health Initiative - galck+

Mental Health Awareness

Mental health is an integral component of overall well-being, and its significance cannot be overstated. In Kenya, like in many parts of the world, access to mental health issues, especially for LGBTQ+, is a pressing concern. Mental health challenges are often exacerbated by societal discrimination, stigma, and limited access to proper mental health services.

LGBTQ+ individuals in Kenya continue to grapple with mental health challenges due to the increasingly hostile environment. Discrimination, violence, and legal limitations based on sexual orientation and gender identity lead to stress, anxiety, depression, and other mental health issues.

In recognition of the critical need for mental health support in the LGBTQ+ community, galck+ established its Mental Health Program/Initiative in 2019. The program officially rolled out in 2020 and has since evolved to become an integral component of galck+'s programming. This initiative was born out of a deep commitment to address the unique mental health challenges faced by LGBTQ+ individuals in Kenya.

Our Goal

The primary goal of our Mental Health Program is to bridge the gap in LGBTQ+-friendly and affirming mental health services while playing a pivotal role in helping LGBTQ+ individuals cope with the emotional distress caused by the threats, violations, and security incidents they encounter.

This is a safe and welcoming space where LGBTQ+ individuals can express themselves fully, receive emotional support, embark on their journey of healing, and be equipped with tools/techniques to navigate the hostile environment and life’s pressures successfully. This program is dedicated to enhancing the overall well-being and resilience of the LGBTQ+ community in Kenya.

Program Access

galck+'s Mental Health Program is tailored to meet the needs of LGBTQ+ individuals. It is open to all community members seeking support and understanding in a non-discriminatory and LGBTQ+-affirming environment/space. This program recognises the importance of inclusivity and diversity within the spectrum.

To ensure ease of access and a seamless experience, we developed a user-friendly and efficient web-based platform that:

  • Allows community members to book therapy appointments easily.
  • Serves a dual purpose by enhancing convenience and collecting valuable data on service utilisation.
  • Supports our therapists by efficiently managing their schedules and appointment tracking.

The success and quality of our mental wellness program are evident in the numbers. By the end of 2021, galck+ had delivered an impressive 405 teletherapy sessions, marking a significant expansion from the initial 20 sessions offered in March 2021. This exponential growth serves as a compelling testament to both the excellence and quality of the services we offer.

Notably, our Mental Wellness Program has now facilitated an astounding total of 2,900 sessions for members of the LGBTQ+ community reflecting an extraordinary 616% increase in utilisation since the program's inception thus underscoring the critical role it plays in supporting mental health and well-being of LGBTQ+ individuals in Kenya.

As the need for these services continues to expand, we continue to find ways to cater to those whose needs might not be catered to due to its limitations. We encourage you to explore the Wellness Hub as it provides valuable tools and information to support your mental well-being as you await your therapy session.

Your mental health is a valuable asset, and we are here to support your journey towards greater well-being.

Emergency Security Response

Since 2016, galck+ has been at the forefront of LGBTQ+ advocacy in Kenya. In line with our vision, all our programmes work to safeguard the rights of LGBTQ+ individuals. We understand the challenges they face in a society that often misinterprets the law, culture, and religion to justify discrimination and violence.
