Objective: Strengthening security response mechanisms for LGBTQ+ persons and organizations in Kenya.
Ensuring the safety and security of LGBTQ+ individuals and organizations remains a core priority for galck+. Over the years, members of the LGBTQ+ community in Kenya have faced heightened threats, including violence, blackmail, harassment, and systemic discrimination. These challenges necessitate proactive and responsive security programming to protect individuals and organizations advocating for queer rights.
Key Activities and Achievements:
- Security Audits and Risk Assessments: Conducted comprehensive security audits for LGBTQ+ organizations, identifying vulnerabilities and providing tailored recommendations to enhance safety.
- Emergency Security Response (ESR): Established a dedicated response unit to provide immediate interventions for individuals facing threats, including relocation, safe housing, and legal assistance.
- Mental Health and Psychosocial Support (MHPSS): Recognizing the mental toll of insecurity, galck+ launched teletherapy services to provide confidential psychological support to affected individuals.
- Security Training and Capacity Building: Provided workshops and training for LGBTQ+ activists and organizations on digital security, personal safety, and risk management.
- Documenting Human Rights Violations: Maintained a secure database to track cases of violence, harassment, and discrimination against LGBTQ+ individuals, providing data to inform advocacy and policy work.
Moving forward, galck+ aims to expand its security response network by increasing safe housing options, strengthening partnerships with legal aid organizations, and enhancing digital security training for activists.
