STATEMENT CONDEMNING THE "HUMAN SEXUAL RIGHTS AND FAMILY VALUES BILL" IN GHANA

March 1st 2024

We, at galck+, **stand in solidarity** with our Ghanaian LGBTQ+ siblings following the recent passage of the anti-homosexuality bill in Ghana. This bill, heavily sponsored by religious and traditional leaders and favoured by most lawmakers, was passed in parliament on Wednesday, 28th February 2024. It seeks to expand existing repressive laws that severely criminalise consensual same-sex sexual acts, those who advocate for the rights of gay, lesbian or other non-conventional sexual or gender identities, and encourages the public to report suspected people to authorities. This law represents **a grave violation of fundamental human rights** and targets a community that is already vulnerable. We urge the Ghanaian president **not to assent to this unjust legislation**. This bill will cultivate a spirit of hatred and injustice against Ghanian citizens hindering the provision of social and public-related services. We encourage room to engage in meaningful dialogue with the LGBTQ+ community and other human rights organisations towards creating a society that respects, protects and upholds the dignity and human rights of all individuals, regardless of their real or perceived sexual orientation or gender identity. We extend our unwavering support to the LGBTQ+ community in Ghana. You are not alone. We believe that **everyone deserves to live free from fear**, and we will continue to advocate your rights and fight for a world where everyone can live freely and authentically.
