Statement on Uganda's Upholding of the Anti-Homosexuality Act

May 4th 2024

We are deeply dismayed by the Ugandan Constitutional Court's decision to uphold the discriminatory Anti-Homosexuality Act. This legislation imposes harsh penalties, including life imprisonment and, in some cases, the death penalty. We strongly condemn this development and are concerned about the implications it carries for our siblings in Uganda.

This ruling is a devastating setback for LGBTQ+ rights not just in Uganda, but across East Africa. Our hearts go out to Uganda's LGBTQ+ community, who now face a heightened reality of fear and persecution. Access to healthcare, education, and basic services will be hindered under such an oppressive regime, pushing marginalised individuals further into the shadows. We believe all people deserve to live with dignity and respect, regardless of who they love. This outdated legislation has no place in modern society.

We urge the Ugandan government to uphold its obligations under international human rights law, which guarantees the right to equality and non-discrimination on the basis of, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity. We call upon the international community to increase pressure on the Ugandan government and to join us in speaking out against this injustice.

galck+ remains committed to creating safe and enabling environments for LGBTQ+ people in Kenya. We recognise that the fight for equality in Uganda directly impacts the well-being of LGBTQ+ individuals across East Africa. We shall continue to advocate regionally and internationally for the protection of LGBTQ+ rights and the dismantling of these discriminatory laws.

We urge all Kenyans who believe in equality to stand with us in condemning this injustice. Let’s speak up against this harmful law with your family, friends, and colleagues. By uniting against the Anti-Homosexuality Act, we can send a powerful message of solidarity and compassion. Together, let’s demonstrate that love, acceptance, and respect for human rights transcend borders.
